This checklist is a discipline aid. It cannot make a trade safe or profitable.

How to Use the Pre-Trade Checklist

  1. Review each item before placing the order.
  2. Tick a box only when the condition has genuinely been checked.
  3. Pay particular attention to the setup, stop-loss, position size and total account risk.
  4. If a critical item is incomplete, pause and review the plan instead of forcing the trade.
  5. Use the progress indicator to confirm how much of the checklist is complete.
  6. Print the completed checklist if you want a temporary record, or reset it before reviewing another trade.

How the Trading Checklist Works

The checklist divides the pre-trade decision into four areas: setup and market context, risk and position size, execution planning, and trading psychology. This creates a repeatable pause between seeing an opportunity and placing an order.

Your selections are processed only in the current browser page. They are not sent to Trading Turtle, saved to a database or stored as a permanent trading record. Refreshing or leaving the page may clear the selections. Use the printable option or record the final decision in your Trading Journal if you need to keep it.

Important: A completed checklist does not validate the market analysis or guarantee an outcome. It confirms only that the listed questions were reviewed.

Benefits of Using a Pre-Trade Checklist

Reduce Avoidable OversightsIt is easy to overlook scheduled news, liquidity, total open risk or an invalid stop when attention is focused on a possible entry. A checklist brings these considerations back into view.
Support More Consistent Decisions
Reviewing the same questions before each trade creates a more consistent process. This makes later journal reviews more meaningful because trades were assessed against similar criteria.
Make It Easier to Skip Weak PlansA missing stop, unclear setup or emotionally driven decision becomes more visible when it must be acknowledged before entry. Sometimes the most disciplined decision is to wait.

– Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is a pre-trade checklist?

A pre-trade checklist is a set of questions reviewed before placing an order. It helps a trader examine the setup, market conditions, entry, stop-loss, position size, execution plan and mental state in a consistent order.

Why should traders use a checklist before entering a trade?

A checklist creates a deliberate pause before execution. It can help reveal missing information, excessive risk, unclear rules or emotional decision-making that may be overlooked when a trader feels pressure to act quickly.

What should be included in a trading checklist?

A useful checklist should cover the validity of the setup, market context, scheduled events, entry and invalidation levels, position size, potential account loss, order type, total open risk and the trader’s ability to follow the plan.

Does completing the checklist mean a trade is safe?

No. Every trade involves uncertainty, and a completed checklist cannot guarantee profit or prevent loss. It shows only that a defined review process was followed.

Does the Pre-Trade Checklist save my answers?

No. The current checklist does not save answers to a Trading Turtle account, database or permanent browser record. Leaving or refreshing the page may reset the selections. Print the checklist or record the decision in your trading journal if you need to keep it.

Can I print the completed checklist?

Yes. Use the Print Checklist button to open your browser’s print options. Depending on your device, you may print it on paper or save it as a PDF.

Should I use the checklist for every trade?

Using the same core checklist consistently makes it more useful. You may adapt the questions to your market and strategy, but critical risk checks should not be ignored simply because a trade looks familiar.

What should I do if an important item is unchecked?

Pause and review the trade before placing the order. An unchecked critical item may indicate that the plan is incomplete. The checklist does not decide for you, but it helps make that gap visible.

Is this checklist suitable for stocks, cryptocurrency and futures?

The general process can be used for many markets. Futures and leveraged products require additional checks for margin, liquidation, funding, contract size and exchange-specific rules.
